The Professional Connection

Welcome to your Abel web site

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY

You are strongly recommended to save this page for future reference and it is your responsibility to keep a backup copy of all your work.

Kindly note that this is NOT a supported Web space and it is created for you to design your Website on a DIY basis. We respectfully point out that any input asked to be made by Abel Internet is chargable and our free technical support applies only for your access to the Internet / Email and does not extend to the utilisation of your Webspace. Abel Internet assumes that our Web clients are able to competently generate their own Web Pages and are able to competently use the software necessary to write and upload Web Pages. Abel Internet takes this opportunity to point out that, as well as Web space, Abel Internet can also provide professional Web Page Design Consultancy. Prices are available on application. Web Page generation is not merely the programming of the pages themselves but the application of expertise which ensures fast load times and the application of Internet norms and practices.

We strongly recommend that you obtain a Web Site/HTML design book from your local library / bookshop if you intend to write the pages yourself.

Alternatively you should visit these servers of interest regarding Web Publishing:

  • Creating Web Sites
  • Web Publishing Software on our Server
  • Web Publishing Software Section on Yahoo

To change your pages log on to ftp.abel.net.uk using your dedicated FTP program (not Netscape or Internet Explorer - see our Anonymous FTP site for appropriate software here). Login as morrice and use your password. Chameleon FTP should automatically put you in the /home/morrice directory. Then go into the htmls directory. (The full path is /home/morrice/htmls ) This is the directory which contains your web site.

Remember your default index files can be, in order of server preference:

  • index.html
  • home.html
  • index.htm
  • home.htm It does not matter which one of these names you name your index files but do not have names which clash, as the server will serve the one higher up in the list of preference. For example this file you are viewing is called index.html, as you can see via FTP. If you do not delete this file and upload index.htm index.html (this file) would still be served until it is deleted because index.html is higher up the list of preference.

NB:- The Web Server is case sensitive - remember this with all links, images, etc.

How Do I Upload My Website ?

    Abel Internet's ftp guide

    1) Obtaining an ftp program to use, if necessary: Windows 95 users (owners of other platforms please see the last line of this paragraph) need a copy of Ws_ftp32. If you do not have one you can download a copy from http://www.abel.net.uk to your own machine as follows: · Point your browser at http://www.abel.net.uk/ · Scroll the left-hand panel until you can see "Use our FTP Site" · Click the LMB - Left Mouse Button - on "Use our FTP Site" · Click the LMB on "ftp/" · Click the LMB on "win95/" · Click the LMB on "ws ftp32.zip" · Save the file in an appropriate place, e.g. Internet Apps. (To add a new submenu to the Programs menu, look up "adding submenu to the Programs "menu"’heading in the Help index on the Start menu.) (Non-Windows 95 users are catered for on the ftp site also; simply make the previous two choices as appropriate.)

    2) Having your material prepared: You need a directory/folder full of the files for the web site. The intended home page should be called/renamed ‘index.html’, without the quotes. Note that this may require you to rename hyperlinks to your home page. (For the rest of this guide ‘folder’ will be used rather than ‘directory/folder’.) Some people prefer to keep their text and graphics files in separate folders. There is nothing to stop you doing this too. For the next stage you need your login/host/User name and Password, as supplied by Abel Internet.

    3) What you then do is: · Click the LMB on "Start"; · Click the LMB on "Programs"; · Click the LMB on "Internet Apps" (or the name of the folder which holds "Ws_ftp32" ); · Click the LMB on "Ws_ftp32"; · The "Host Name" entry should [be changed to] read ‘ftp.abel.net.uk’,without the quotes; · The "Host Type" entry should [be chosen to] read ‘Sun Solaris’, without the quotes; · Enter your login/host/User name as supplied by Abel Internet; · Enter your Password as supplied by Abel Internet; · Click the LMB on "OK"; · Maximise the window if this has not already been done - this is simply for clarity; · For transferring text/HTML files highlight the "ASCII" option · For transferring images highlight the "Binary" option · In the ‘"Local system"’ section move to the source folder on your machine; · In the ‘"Remote system" section move to the target folder - the one with your hostname as its name - by going up one level via double-clicking and then down into the correct folder; · Go down further into the ‘htmls’ folder; · Highlight files on the left and use the ‘"->"’ button to move your files across; · Close down the ftp window to finish.
